Bio-Stimulants are a key tool in reviving soil biology to put farmers on the path to reduced fertiliser use, improved plant growth and better resistance to water and abiotic stresses (Abiotic factors are non-living chemical and physical elements in the environment, which affect individual organisms as well as ecosystems. Examples are UV, IR and visible light, radiation, temperature, wind, humidity, water, pH, heavy metals, atmospheric gases, soil chemicals, and, more generally, climate.)
Bio-Stimulants increase the efficiency of soil systems, assist in the development of seedlings and enhance the plant’s vital processes, improving yields and plant quality.
They also enhance a plant’s nutrition efficiency, abiotic stress tolerance and/or plant quality traits, regardless of its nutrient contents.
Bio-Stimulants include humic acids, algae extracts, and plant growth-promoting bacteria as well fish protein hydrolysates.
We supply two brands of fish hydrolysate Fish IT and Bio Marinus, including an organic option to farmers who require it.
We also offer EM, a sustainable microbial inoculant from EMNZ to help activate local and native micro-organisms that live in soil and water.
The fish hydrolysate we supply are made using a low temperature enzymatic hydrolysis process which breaks down the fish used to make the product, retaining the proteins, amino acids, naturally occurring vitamins, including Omega 3.
Fish Hydrolysate biologically enhances the soil and promotes root growth, therefore creating the ideal environment to substantially increase biological activity. The natural oils in open the cell wall structure of the plant, assisting essential nutrients to go directly into the plant, therefore increasing nutrient use efficiency.
Additional trace elements promote the growth of bacteria and fungi. These organisms improve nutrient recycling and availability. This extra activity also makes soils less compacted and better able to drain, while still retaining available moisture.
The hydrolysate helps improves clover density and nitrogen fixation, plant productivity and condition with a resultant improvement in the health of animals.
The technology is based around Effective Micro-organisms or EM. EM was developed in Japan in the 1980’s and is used in more than 140 countries around the world. It has quickly gained recognition for its variety of uses. The product is manufactured in New Zealand.
EM works by getting the natural processes to function, the way nature intended by stimulating biological activity in the soil and plant. Using EM will improve crop and pasture yields and enhance fertiliser performance..
The microorganisms in EM have a reviving action on growing systems and are completely safe to use, making EM the perfect biological farming tool. EM works for soil the way yoghurt works for our bodies – increasing the beneficial micro-organisms which will improve soil health and function.

Matheson Agri Services started in Gore more than 20 years ago, providing Rock Salt to farmers looking to improve animal health.
Responding to demand from clients for natural fertiiser products, MAS began selling biological fertilisers and a natural phosphate product called CarboPhos.
These products were eventually supplemented with a range of Fish Hydrolysate products.
MAS now provides an expanded range of Animal Health products, Bio-Stimulants and Natural Fertilisers.
Based in Milton, the company has representation in Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast.
